Today my wife and I were wondering where all the little wedding sayings came from! I got an email earlier today from a bride saying, “We’re so excited that we’re closer to tying the knot.”
Heather and I use phrases like “tie the knot all the time” while talking to brides, but never really thought about where the phrase comes from! So after a little searching around on the internet this is what we’ve found. (keep in mind it was a little tiny research, as in the first answer we came to is what we decided was fact. hahaha)
Why the term “tie the knot”?
The phrase “tie the knot” goes back to Roman times. Back then, the bride would wear a girdle that was tied in many knots – the groom had the duty of untying them!
Why a ring?
Earlier societies believed that a circle had magical properties. It could, for instance, tie one’s soul to another. Therefore, early brides and grooms would be encircled by a ring of woven grass. Today that circle, the wedding ring, signifies a lasting tie between two people.
Why a best man?
In some societies a would-be groom had to abduct the bride of his choice. To make sure he would not be disturbed while he carried off the love of his life, a good friend accompanied him to fight off anyone who tried to stop them.
Why a wedding cake?
In ancient Rome, the wedding cake was broken atop the bride’s head, one of many fertility rituals performed at weddings. The guests were then allowed to eat the cake.
Why throw rice?
Rice, a grain, is a symbol of fruitfulness. In some parts of the world, the custom of sprinkling brides and grooms is meant to promote productive marriages.
Something old is to signify continuity, and could be a piece of lace, jewelry, or a handkerchief. Something new signifies optimism for the future, and is often an article of clothing, or the wedding rings. Something borrowed represents happiness, which is often a piece of jewelry or handkerchief from a happily married relative or friend. Something blue signifies fidelity, loyalty, and love. In biblical times blue, not white, symbolized purity. Both the bride and groom wore a band of blue material around the bottom of their wedding attire.
Walmart, Gatorade, Kay’s, Mcdonalds, Subway, Espn; (click the links to view the commercials in a new window) all of this companies have great commercials! One of our favorite commercials is one from De Beers -It was shot great, has a catchy song, and a creative message.
With commercials like the one above, why do some companies settle for having a poorly put together commercial running on TV? Growing up in the small itsy bitsy town of Terre Haute, IN; I could almost understand crappy commercials, but this is Nashville. This is were all the creative people come to reside, and “Make it big” so to speak. There is no lack of creative people in this city, so that can’t be the reason for the cheap commercials.
“Cheap,” hmmm? Maybe thats our answer. Maybe companies just can’t afford to pay what it would cost to put together a good quality commercial? If thats the case, wow! Get a hold of us! We would almost respect it more if a company came to us and said, “We know we can’t afford you, but is there anything we can work out so that we as a company can have a good quality commercial?” If you can’t afford to get a professional, good quality commercial shot, than just wait until you can afford one. You don’t want a bad quality commercial to be the representation of your company.
Now don’t confuse a “corny commercial” with a “bad quality commercial.” There are alot of corny commercials that get the point across, and are actually shot really well! What is a crappy commercial? A crappy commercial is one that has shaky camera shots, bad audio levels, or badly colored video footage.
Nothing annoys us more than watching a commercial that has not only a cheap camera, but the shot is shaky! We understand that , cameras do cost a lot of money, and good cameras cost even more. Having a shaky shot on the other hand, is unacceptable, and shows that the videographer that was chosen was an amateur.
Now if you really want to distract your potential clients from the message of your commercial, have bad audio levels. The only thing that bugs us more than a bad shaky camera is having to scramble around for the remote to turn down the tv due to crazy audio levels.
Again, We don’t really know what the deal is with Nashville commercials lately, but it seams like for everyday that goes by, there is 2 new crappy commercials on tv. Consider companies such as Nike, Victoria’s Secret, and Cadillac. These companies are all very established, and extremely successful! So if these companies put so much of there attention toward producing good quality commercials even after being successful, why is it that new companies, or companies who are just trying to make a splash in the consumer world, put their commercials on the back burner? While living in such a media driven world, it’s nearly impossible to reach consumers without some type of video advertisement. Our suggestion, besides using us to film your next commercial, is this: If for some reason, you do end up with a poorly shot commercial, don’t air it. It will only give you a bad name, and leave all your viewers unsatisfied.
Now my wife wouldn’t let me post clips of the commercials we think were poorly shot, and after thinking it over, its probably good I didn’t. Instead, I’ll leave you with another one of our favorite commercials.
As you can see, we’ve switched over to wordpress. Please excuse us as we learn the layout of the site:) Well today we had the best weather you could ask for. Mix nice weather, a few people, a grill, and you have the perfect setting for a fun superbowl! All of us wanted the Stealers to win, except of course Chana. For a second we really thought Chana was about to walk out of our house talking trash about how the cardinals made a crazy comeback!! haha!! Thank God, for Holmes!! haha!!
We’ve also just given in to watching the Office!! Oh goodness, this show actually is pretty funny!!
“Why should we hire a videographer when we could just use our uncle’s video camera?” Well, you could do that; however, what would happen if the camera would die, the tape would burn up, or someone stood in front of the camera’s view the whole ceremony? We’re professionally trained in videography (which means it’s all we do) and we guarantee that none of these things would happen if you hired us. We use, at least, two cameras; which means you’ll have more than one angle and more than one shot. Not only will you see the bride as she walks down the aisle, but you’ll see the groom’s face as he sees her, and (possibly) the mother’s face (as her eyes tear up.)
With us, you will be able to hear the entire ceremony on your video because we use top of the line wireless mics. They’re not visible; they’re tiny lapel mics that can be easily hidden but still makes your vows easily heard. We guarantee that your video will be completely audible and clear because we only use the best and newest equipment.
A huge plus in hiring us is that we will edit your video. We use the newest editing systems to edit your video into your style. As we film your wedding, we spend a lot of time with you and your fiance. So, we get to know your personalities , which we later use to better tell your story. If you use your uncle’s camera, then there will be no editing, no clear picture, and no clear audio. Trust us, you want to hire us as your professional videographer.
“We have a photographer, so we don’t need a videographer.” This is one of the biggest mistakes that brides make. Photographers and videographers are a necessity. We trust that you’ll have great photos to hang on your walls; but your home will not be complete without your wedding video -your keepsake. With your video, you can forever re-live your vows, your first dance as husband and wife, your walk down the aisle, and, even, your tears cried that day.
You want to hire us because we promise all these things to you. We’ll give you your entire filmed and edited DVD in a custom DVD case. Your wedding will be yours forever to share with your family and friends for many years to come.
There are many options when it comes to your wedding video. Along with your ceremony, we can capture your rehearsal, your morning getting ready, and/or your reception.
You may think, “Why would I want my rehearsal filmed? It’s the same thing as the ceremony without the dress or decorations.” However, it’s not the same. You don’t want to miss all of those priceless moments that probably won’t happen at your ceremony. You’ll get a chance to see all of your family and friends together before your “big day.” You’ll have a chance to look back on all of the activities, jokes, and “advice” everyone tries to give you. These are all priceless memories.
The Bride’s Morning (or your morning getting ready) is definitely one of the most important options you should choose. Many brides claim that they don’t remember much of their morning -”It was all a blur.” This will give your family, friends, and (more importantly) your groom a chance to see you as you get ready. After all, your groom doesn’t see you for the first half of the day. I’m sure he’d love to see you beautifying yourself just for him.
Let’s not forget your reception. It’s not just a “big party.” This is the celebration of your wedding. Most people don’t need to be convinced that they need this captured. This is the time most of the joyful tears will fall (from your first dance to the mother and groom dance.) You will want this to be captured. Remember, we don’t just capture weddings, we capture time and give it back to you.
Please be organized, on-time, and follow the rules. Things will go much smoother. You should talk to everyone involved in the wedding, at least two months before your wedding, about what they should pick up, when they should pick it up, or where they should be for your wedding -and confirm that they know it! You don’t want to be delayed because you don’t know where your shoes are.
Make sure you are on time. Trust me, vendors will love this. You never know, your venue may have another wedding or event after yours; and it is very considerate to do everything on time and follow the rules. Some venues will return your deposit fee if everything is still in place and the wedding has gone well.
Great lighting can enhance every one’s perception and experience. It’s been said that 90% of the really great wedding videos you have seen are great because of great lighting. Your ceremony may be outside, or indoors (where sometimes there is natural light windows) and natural light is the best lighting to work. At your reception, you can set great lighting that is best for video while remaining romantic. Your wedding doesn’t have to be completely candlelit. Mix your lighting. Try adding some small candelabras, lanterns, or chandeliers, to your “candle in the center of the table” look. There’s nothing worse than watching your first dance as husband and wife when you can barely see your faces because it’s too dark -we know you want to see and remember your emotions. There even is such a thing as a lighting designer; and they’re actually affordable and well worth the hiring. If you hire a lighting designer, then you won’t have to worry about doing the work yourself. Remember, they’re professionals, so they know what lighting will work and what won’t. They will design and you finalize the decision. It’s that easy.
What can you do to make your wedding video better? I know you’re thinking, “But I thought that was your job, you’re the videographer!” Well, yes, we’re the videographers; and we will try to professionalize every aspect of your video. However, there are some aspects that only brides and grooms can control.
The Bride’s Morning
As more people discover it, the Bride’s Morning is becoming more popular and desired. This is the most exciting and longest part of the day for the bride; but many brides don’t think it important enough to have captured. This is the time when the bride, the bridesmaids, and the mother of the bride begin to beautify themselves. While most brides have told us they don’t remember much of getting ready, we will capture every moment -your makeup being applied, your hair being styled, and even your dress being laced up.
-One
When deciding where you will spend most of your morning getting ready, choose a place that is well lit (with natural lighting, if possible) and easy on the eye. Natural light is much softer on the face; and the soft light always gives that “beautiful princess bride” setting for your video.
-Two
As much as we all enjoy our donuts, starbucks, and egg Mcmuffins in the morning, please clean them up or hide the bags. Tell everyone who may be getting ready with you to do the same. Nothing looks worse than you, in that beautiful soft lighting, with an empty starbucks cup stuck to a wet napkin behind you. Remember, you set the mood, so please clean up your trash.
-Three
Let’s face it, your dress is one of the most important attributes to your wedding. You spent months searching for it, trying it on, and saving up for it. You should treat it like it’s a “royal gown” (and who knows, it may be.) So please don’t hang your gown on an old wire or plastic hanger -use a nice padded hanger – or lay it across an attractive piece of furniture.
Decorate your surroundings. If you have any jewelry, shoes, hankies, or garters, lay them out too. Set the mood to look like you’re getting ready for your wedding, because that’s what you’re doing.
-Four
We don’t film any nudity or show more skin than you desire. Traditionally, we leave the room while you change into your gown, then come back to capture your gown being zipped or laced up.
Remember, this is your wedding day, so just have fun. Don’t be afraid to look at the camera and smile or make a goofy face. Be yourself. You and your family will be the ones watching your video. So you want to look back on the day to remember exactly how you and they felt and acted that day. Just have fun.
